About the project
Looking Back, Summer Never Ends: Originally released in 1996, Sons of 1973 captures a warm, carefree world shaped by youth, friendship, romance, and the fleeting beauty of everyday moments. Drawing from Japanese pop, Shibuya-kei, and soul influences, the seven-track album feels like a collection of memories from a summer that never quite ended.
For the album’s 30th anniversary, I wanted to refresh Satellite Lovers’ visual identity while staying connected to the band’s previous records. Inspired by the album’s dreamy atmosphere and varied musical energy, I reimagined the vinyl sleeve and developed a visual campaign that preserves its original emotional character while giving it a more contemporary feel.
Process
Creative Direction & Visual Language: Rooted in nostalgia and sensory storytelling, the visual direction draws from the album’s reflective, colorful, and atmospheric sound. I explored layered textures, expressive typography, and imagery to create a tactile aesthetic that feels nostalgic yet modern. The resulting album sleeve bridges vintage influences with a contemporary sensibility, translating the music’s emotional depth into a visual experience.
Design Development & Applications: I extended the visual language across supporting artwork, including posters, vinyl stickers, and merchandise. Each application builds on the album’s textures, typography, and color palette to create a cohesive visual identity. I also explored motion through short animations of the vinyl stickers, introducing movement to the artwork while maintaining the project’s nostalgic, atmospheric feeling.
